Louvre Abu Dhabi, UAE
Staying true to the Middle East’s penchant for flamboyance and style, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is a magnificent structure that appears to float above the waters.
The futuristic, dome shaped structure will house an eclectic collection of art including priceless masterpieces from Van Gogh, Monet and da Vinci. The Louvre Abu Dhabi will open its door in mid 2016 and is poised to rival the world’s greatest art museums.
The Setouchi Art Festival, Japan
The Setouchi Islands of Japan are renowned for their tranquil waters, pristine sandy beaches and rice paddies terraces. However, every three years, these islands are transformed into a creative playground where artists, designers and architects collaborate to craft innovative installations.
Highlights include the stunningly beautiful Teshima Art Museum – a collaboration between artist Rei Naito and architect Ryue Nishizawa. The event will take place over three seasons of the year : Spring (March 20th — April 17th), Summer (July 18th — September 4th) Autumn(October 8th — November 6th).
Surf Snowdonia, Wales
The sprawling mountains and valleys of Snowdonia attracts thousands of adventure sports fans every year. Over the years, the landscape has seen some impressive man-made augmentations, including an underground trampolin center and Europe’s largest zip line.
But the best is slated to arrive in 2016 : a 12 million pound, 300 meters long artificial surf lagoon that unleashes a 2 meter high wave every sixty seconds. It’s currently the world’s only indoor surf pool and the varying size of the wave in different parts of the lagoon makes it beginner friendly as well.
Glow, Santa Monica, USA
Come September 2016 and the powdery sands of Santa Monica Beach will host the triennial Glow festival – the first free all-night arts event in the United States. The event is characterized by thoughtful, interactive and unorthodox art installations conceptualized by more than 200 artists from around the world. By hosting Glow, Santa Monica joins a handful of cities like Paris, Montreal, Rome, Brussels, Minneapolis and Tel Aviva to host “white night” or “nuit blanche” events.
Monarch Butterfly Migration
Every thousands of Monarch butterflies fly south to Mexico to escape the harsh winters in the United States.
This year however, an unprecedented 250 million butterflies are expected to take the trip, making it one of the most spectacular natural phenomena.
Field of Light, Uluru
This April, acclaimed British artist Bruce Munro and his team will head to Australia’s Ayers Rock Resort to install more than 50,000 slender stemmed frosted-glass spheres. The installation, dubbed as Field of Light has appeared in the UK, USA and Mexico so far, but this will be the largest installation attempted.
Viewers can follow pathways into the installation and watch a spectacular landscape unfold under a brilliantly starlit sky. The event can be witnessed from 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017.
FIFA World Football Museum, Zurich
Zurich will welcome a whole lot more football fans this year when it opens the three storied, 3500-sq-metre interactive museum. Costing a whopping 180 million Swiss Francs, the multimedia museum will give visitors a chance to experience the thrill and excitement that football evokes in millions of fans around the world.
The museum will also house several historical relics like the original World Cup Trophy along with over 1,000 memorabilia. Visitors can also test their own ball skills in the giant pinball machine which guarantees hours of fun.
Shanghai Disney Resort, China
Disney has pulled all stops for its newest and first resort in mainland China. Slated to open in early 2016, the six themed park will house the largest ever Enchanted Storybook Castle. Other attractions include a pirate-themed Treasure Cove featuring a state-of-the-art Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle of the Sunken Treasure ride, the Garden of the Twelve Friends with murals of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac depicted as Disney characters and an entertainment district with a Toy Story Hotel and several restaurants, nightlife and shopping hubs.
